It all depends on the kind of dress you're going to wear, the color of the dress, your skins complection, the amount of jewelery, your hair cut, color, and texture. But normally the best thing to go with is to wear your hair up. None of the "few curls hanging down" because by the end of the night, they'll just be stringy and lost all their bounce. it depends on the dress. Thin straps or strapless go with the hair down. Halter or if there is alot of "activity" at the top of the dress wear your hair up to draw away from the dress

Updo's look the most elegant but don't necessarily look that great in pictures. What I've found looks best is the half up half down look. That way it's a sexy formal look.
